The artist Michael Flomen works with unexposed photographic paper and film. His darkroom is the outside world at night. To follow him in his creative practice, it was impossible to use any conventional light source. An infrared camera, utilizing the technique known as night vision, enabled us to capture him at work. This method produces a green image.

L’artiste Michael Flomen utilise du film et du papier photographique vierge. Sa chambre noire est le monde extérieur, la nuit. Pour le suivre dans son processus créatif, il était donc impossible d’utiliser des éclairages conventionnels. Une caméra sensible à la lumière infrarouge nous a permis de le suivre la nuit. Cette technique appelée vision nocturne produit une image verte.

MICHAEL FLOMEN
Born in Montreal in 1952, Michael Flomen was the master printer of J. Henri Lartigue`s exhibition for America in 1975, Flomen continues to evolve the language of his photography. His recent photograms combine the phenomena that are constantly occurring in nature, whether the actions of water, light, air or other external physical elements. He does so with an ingenious hands-on approach that contrasts the passive photographic role of simple documentation. His approach is less egoistic in its understanding of the photographer’s role, in that it engages in a visual discourse that questions our place in the universe … As Michael Flomen says ``I make photograms of things we do not see, but know are there.

DE MICHAEL FLOMEN
Né à Montréal en 1952, Michael Flomen fait, en 1975, les tirages d’exposition pour l’Amérique du Nord, des œuvres du photographe J. Henri Lartigue. À travers sa production personnelle, Flomen contribue à faire évoluer le langage de la photographie. Pour la création de ses œuvres récentes, des photogrammes, il a recours aux différents phénomènes naturels provenant de l’action de l’eau, de la lumière, du vent ou d’autres événements naturels. Son approche très organique diffère des méthodes conventionnelles de la photographie documentaire. Son interprétation du rôle du photographe est moins fondée sur l’intention du créateur que sur une quête visuelle interrogeant la place et le rôle de l’individu dans l’univers. Comme il le dit lui-même, il photographie des phénomènes que nous expérimentons mais que nous ne voyons pas.
